Ustalav | Day 10
Show me where the ghost touched you.

We returned to town, healed up and got some rest. Kendra cooked us breakfast the next morning as always (and for some reason Tenzin’s is always better than the rest of ours.)

Ustalav | Day 9
The Haunting of Harrowstone.

We returned to the Prison in the early morning of the 9th day in Ustalav. We made our way back to the western balcony where Scarab was unable to unlock the door and Mule was unable to knock it down.

I, Alex, acolyte of Me’Tal and herald of the great mule, simply played my lute until they finally got the door open. We entered the top floor of the prison, Scarab taking lead. To the east we found the giant crumbled wall which overlooked the murky lake below where Scarab was again ambushed by stirges. Mule joined the fight and again had her strength sapped by the filthy diseased creatures before we smashed them.

We continued on into the east wing of the top floor of Harrowstone. We eventually discovered a cell block and what used to be the guard station which led out to the now crumbling balcony above the front entrance. Just west of there Mule heard something and discovered the remains of Father Charlatan. She relayed the following to me:

I felt the mark on my hand burn and blacked out. I awoke in a coffin and was confronted with a man who claimed he was falsely imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit. He told me that I had died, but that he could return me to life if I helped him to free his spirit. He also claimed he was servant of Torag.

I didn’t believe a word of it. After some back and forth, I prayed and realized this was all a trick. I felt a hammer appear at my hip. I grabbed it and attacked Father Charlatan before I awoke again in the prison.

Along with her own fight to purge Charlatan from her body, we were able to help excorsize the spirit using holy water and prayer. Mule finally woke up and we saw a woman’s ghostly hand appear from the floor and drag Charlatan’s spirit away.

Suddenly I heard music and my ass cheek burned. I was confronted by a ghostly apparition who I knew must be the Piper.

He stopped playing his flute as two stirges hovered behind him. He told me that he needed help to free his spirit. He said that he was not responsible for anything they said he did and that he was falsely imprisoned. He said that if I could help him free his spirit and destroy the angry evil side of his spirit in the prison, than he could be free.

I said yes, that I would help and I suddenly came to, as if out of a trance. The others told me I was bleeding from some unknown wounds, but I don’t know what they are talking about.

Suddenly the skeletons in the east block cells came to life. We fended off an attack from 4 and then opened the remaining cells and rid the top floor of the evil within.

Scarab and Mule found an old ladder leading up to a trap door. Mule opened it and triggered an avalanche of stone debris. Scarab was able to jump out of the way. Scarab made his way back up the ladder and opened the door where he found a giant stirge. After killing the pest, I searched and found a stairwell down to the first floor. I heard the sound of someone asking for help echoing off the walls. It must have been coming from below, but I’m not sure where exactly.

Before I could investigate further, Scarab and the rest started yelling. Ghostly walls began forming over the destroyed portions of the prison. I wanted to stay, but was out voted and we ran back to the door we came through. It was locked with a ghost lock. Scarab poured holy water over it, but it just regenerated. Mule used her divine energy to temporarily remove the lock and we exited the prison and back out onto the west balcony. We ran full speed out of the front gate before ghostly gates formed over the physical remenants of the old gate. We saw spirits now roaming the grounds before we marched back to Ustalav and Kendra’s house.

Ustalav | Day 8
Welcome To Hotel Harrowstone. You can check in...

Before making our way to the prison, we made another visit to the Temple of Pharasma. We finally have their trust and since we were helping to rid the town of the blashemy that are the undead, they provided us with holy water.

The Prison sits ominously atop a hill just outside of town. The gate has fallen down and a large murky pond has partially flooded the east wing.

Mule passed through the gates first and was overcome with the feeling that her skin was burning and a sense of fear. The feeling quickly passed and we began searching the grounds. We first investigated the area where our dear friend the Professor had died. It seems clear that the gargoyle which fell on him did not do so by accident. We also found arcane runes around the foundation of the prison which seem to have been put there by the cult Lorrimor mentions in his Journal. The Whispering Way.

We proceeded to one of the old guard towers where Mule was ambushed by a swarm of rats that infected her with some filthy disease and sapped her strength. After fighting off the rats, we made our way to the west balcony. As Scarab tried to pick the lock of a door leading into the top floor, we were set upon by a haunted scythe. Side note, the prison was apparently notorious for dealing death sentences by scythe in full view of the cells and prisoners inside.

The scythe flew at us, held by disembodied skeletal hands. Our attacks did nothing until we discovered it’s weakness. A combination of holy water and divine energy from Mule. The blade of the scythe remained and we kept it in case we could find a use for it. We decided to head back to town, heal up and return the next day.

Ustalav | Day 7

We seem to have slowly gained the towns trust. The council and the Temple of Pharasma seem to trust us as well.

We have been invited to the Town hall for a town meeting, most likely about the strange happenings and undead rising from their graves.

We arrived at the town hall meeting in the evening. The frightened and angry townsfolk filled the hall. The Town Council was trying to calm the people who had been terrorized by hauntings, zombies and all manner of undead.

We were summoned up to the front where the Council asked if we could help. The crowd was yelling and the general consensus was that it was the old ruins of Harrowstone that was causing all this trouble.

Scarab and Alex tried to speak to the crowd, and though some people were swayed, the crowd quickly became more frightened and began fighting.

Suddenly the oil lanterns on the wall burst into flames and 3 flaming skulls burst through the windows. Several townsfolk were caught in the fire as most of the people ran for the front doors. We battled the skulls as the fire spread.

We destroyed the supernatural skulls and, with the help of Kendra and the Council, we saved those caught in the fire and doused the flames in order to save the hall.

Ustalav | Day 5 & 6
We have THE POWER!!!

We awoke early on our 5th day in town as the sun barely pierced the thick fog that constantly hangs onto the earth around Ustalav.

We prayed to our gods and practiced our craft. The growing threat of the undead, the untimely death of Professor Lorrimor along with missing animals, this whispering way cult and this Hephenus Gibs seemingly possessed, we need sharpen our skills along with our weapons.

We also did some research on the whispering way cult in the professor’s library.

Day 6

As Tenzin finished his morning meditation on the roof, he was greeted by Sheriff Caeler coming up the hill. We gathered in the living room as Caeler informed us that his deputy had been murdered at the site of the bloody memorial desecration. We agreed to investigate while he attended to the family of the deputy and the funeral arrangements.

We discovered the memorial had again be desecrated, now with a VE. We determined the deputy had come upon his attacker during the bloody painting and was attacked. He had several defensive wounds and a final death blow sliced his throat open.

We discovered a trail of blood leading away from the murder site and followed it back to what can only be described as a shack. A tiny house belonging to Gibs Hephenus.

The Tale of Day 6 as told by Alex RosenGunn
Ballad of the Fourth Day,

I awoke to the banging of Mighty Mules Forge,
And to the Tea Kettle of Monk Tenzin,
Then along came the bungling Sheriff Benjan,
He had most troubling news at hand,
He doth spoke with such terror & fright,
Someone had killed, Deputy Vrodish overnight.
The Sherrif then asked us to aid, if we could.
And we said we most certainly will and would.
We travelled to Temple of Pharasma to see the new corpse,
Some of us walked, I rode my horse.
Mule deduced there were wounds from defence,
please note, the head acolyte wreaked of shat and incense.
Then did we head to the scene of the crime,
there Scrab the thief, found a trail in no time.
The blood lead us to the home of the Gibs,
and the group split in two, I tell no fibs.
Mule and I did knock upon the front door,
While Tensin and Scarab waited around back… Score.
Gibs awoke and did answer, with wounds on his arm,
this caused Mule to push in, still meaning him no harm.
After a quick exchange, Gibs seemed lost,
And Scarab and Tenzin looked around, things did get tossed.
Alex soon found a razor and waterskin hidden in the pile of wood,
And this made Mule strong arm Gibs into coming with us, as he should.
We took him back to Benjan, and locked him up,
and then in Drow “Hiy ne, cull, Shcup.”
Which translates into had to leave for the train,
so I must take my leave and refrain…

Ustalav | Day 4
Zombies & Parenting for Dummies

We awoke on this Thor’s Day….speaking of, who is this Thor? Obviously some inferior demigod sure to be struck down by the GREAT THUNDERING AXE of Me’Tal.

SO, we awoke this morning……

1. Kendra tells the PCs that they should inform the temple of Pharasma about the zombie. Pharasma and her followers view the undead a perversion of death and the natural cycle of life. They may be of some help in guarding the town against any further problems if they arise (pun intended). +

2. The boy who stole the book. When the PCs arrive at the Unfurling Scroll, they are told that the boy never came to school. If they arrive early, they wait and he never comes. The shopkeeper/teacher asks if they can check on the boy at his home, since he needs to attend to his other students. (agreeing to do this gains 1 trust)

When the PCs arrive. They find the door to the home is open. A baby can be heard crying inside. The sun is obscured by overcast clouds and fog hangs heavy and close to the ground. Scratching and groans can be heard coming from the house, barely audible next to the babies screams.

Fog slowly creeps into the entrance of the house as the PCs enter and they see, in this small single level house, 2 skeletons and 1 zombie. The skeletons are trying to bash down a door towards the back of the house while a zombie is clamouring to get to a baby that is oddly placed atop a tall cupboard in the house kitchen.

We saved the family and talked to Theodore Barhtolemew..something…Damn he had a lot of names. He said he simply wasn’t finished reading the book and took it. He felt ashamed and hid it, not wanting to get in trouble.

We brought him to the Temple of Pharasma and the boy apologized to the priests. We met with the Father Ichabod, the head priest Grimburrow was away. They healed us and tended to our wounds. Alex whined….A LOT! In any case, they seem to trust us and have warmed up to us since we first dealt with them.

We informed them of the undead risings. They had heard rumors, but weren’t sure until now that the sitings were real. They agreed to keep vigilant in the coming nights.

Ustalav | Day 3 Cont...
Unfurling scrolls and Town Posting Poles (You Should look at them).

The next morning Scarab and Mule thought it best to visit the town Sherrif. They found their way to the small and underwhelming town Jail where they were met at the door by deputy Riff. Scarab said he had some information for the Sheriff.

Sheriff Benjan Caeller

The Sheriff came out to meet the out of towners and asked what business they had. They told him of the vandalism and asked if there were any other reports or problems before now. They also asked if he had seen the symbol before. Benjan said they had very little trouble with vandalism, especially directed at sacred site such as the one built in memory of those who died protecting the town from the dangerous criminals once housed at Harrowstone. He also hadn’t seen or heard of any symbols resembling the bloody V.

Mule asked about the boy Bartholamew and Benjan directed them to the Unfurling Scroll where the boy studied with Alendru Ghoroven.

When asked about the boy, Alendru said that Bart was a good boy, good student and absolutely loved books. He’s not sure why he would steal, but if Mule was helping the Temple, they could come and speak to the boy the next morning before class.

Alex asked if Alendru had access to any information on Harrowstone or the whispering way. Alendru said that “since the group hadn’t been causing any trouble and seemed to be going out of their way to help the Temple”, he would allow them to look through the books he had on hand.

Ustalav | Day 3
Crypts and Bloods...sucking Bugs.

The next morning we decided to see if we could find the weapons in the graveyard. Alex insist that we include the priests. Most of the party go with him to get them. When they get to the Temple, Alex tells the priests that they are there, as requested, to get them before going to try and find the hidden weapons.

Alex is told that the Acolytes were actually sent out very very early to go and investigate the crypt themselves and they had found nothing. Alex isn’t sure what changed from the day before, but the head cleric seemed to be acting strange compared to the day before .After finding out that Pharasma’s acolytes headed out to the crypt without them, Alex walked off in huff with “Good day sirs…..I SAID GOOD DAY!!!!”. Tenzin followed and they headed off to the Rest Lands to meet up with Scarab.

Mule stayed behind and asked the Cleric Mortimor if she could ask some questions. Hoping Mule was interested in converting, he let her inside. After asking some questions, Mule asked if there was anything else she could do to help (in hopes of gaining some good will.) Father Mort told Mule (in a whisper so that the others in temple wouldn’t know he was asking for help) that one of the children in town, bartholamew had taken one of the books out of their library. Mule was told he’s a good kid who loves books and if she could retrieve the book and find out why Bart took it, it would be very much appreciated.

Mule left catch up with the rest of the group at the Rest Lands.

Meanwhile... Scarab, not trusting the people from the temple, decided to check out the graveyard on his own. He finds a crypt at the intersection in question with the lock broken. He stealthily slips inside and starts to look around. Just after he heads down the stairs to the lower level, he is attacked by a giant centipede. As luck would have it, the centipede is inept and cuts itself trying to attack Scarab. It runs away and skitters through a hole in the wall. Just as another centipede is closing on Scarab, he decides to exercise the better part of valor. He figures he can warn his friends of danger when they enter later. He leaves the crypt, placing the broken lock back on the door. He then decides to visit Lorrimor’s grave while he awaits his friends arrival.

As Scarab is waiting, Tenzin and Alex entered the Rest Lands. They came across 4 little girls playing Jump Rope. They were singing this strange song

Put her body on the bed.
Take a knife and lop her head.
Watch the blood come out the pipe.
Feeds the stirge, so nice and ripe.
Drops of red so sparkly bright.
Splatters spell her name just right.
With a hammer killed his wife.
Now he wants to claim your life.
Tricksy father tells a lie.
Listen close or you will die.

Alex approached the girls and was able to convince them that he was friendly (and asked them to get in his van like a creeper…..ok….that didn’t happen. There are no van’s in pathfinder). He played a little Jig as the girls played.

Suddenly they heard a loud buzzing. As Tenzin and Alex looked for the source, they were set upon by two tiny stirges:stirge.jpg

Tenzin squashed them.

The group met up and stealthily entered the crypt where they encountered and smushed the giant centipedes (and have now become the town exterminators.) They found the stash of weapons “hidden” in a sarcophagus. The acolytes from Pharasma were either inept or lying.

After procuring the cache of items, they went back to the Lorrimor estate to research what these items could be. The professor had kept many notes and these items were well documented. Alex copied what he found in the Tattered Adventure Journal

Ustalav | Day 2 |After the Funeral
Who does this Pharasma think she is!?

Adventure Log:
After inspecting the books and the Journal, we decide to pay the temple of Pharasma a visit.

They are not keen on allowing strangers to use view the temple records and tomes. They rather curtly suggest trying the town hall.

When the idea of a cache of items in an old crypt is brought up, the head priest claims no knowledge of it’s existence but says it’s possible. He insists we take two of his acolytes to supervise if the party goes to investigate. Despite the rest of the parties’ misgivings, Alex assures him that we will.

Alex heads to the town hall to do some basic research about the burning of the prison. This referenced the memorial by the river, the wife of the warden and some of the infamous prisoners.

At this point the party split up. Alex and Tenzin stay to research and/or meditate, respectively.

Mule and Scarab head to the memorial, which Scarab thinks would be a fine place to find something hidden(clue or otherwise).

When we got there, all we found was the memorial freshly vandalized with blood with the letter “V”. Scarab didn’t think the townsfolk would appreciate the desecration, so he and Mule washed the blood off of the memorial.

Meanwhile, Alex had researched The Piper of Illmarsh.

We all went back to Kendra’s for the night.

Journey To Ustalav | Saying goodbye to Professor Lorrimer.
Finding a Path.

After a long Journey from Crepscule across the ocean, the Trinity natives arrive in Ustalav for the funeral of their mentor, savior and father figure, the kind and loving Professor Lorrimor.

They are welcomed to town by his only daughter Kendra who offers her home to Mule, Alex, Scarab and Tenzin for as long as they stay in Ustalav.

Though the town is wary and mostly unwelcoming to outsiders (non-locals), the actions of the newly arrived adventurers at the burial ceremony has earned them a little bit of trust with the council members present. Their swift and non-violent handling of a group of belligerent locals impressed Father Grimborrow. He was especially impressed with the dark and haunting dirge performed by Alex.

After the funeral, the group returned to the Lorrimer home with Kendra to meet with Councilmen Hearthmount for the reading of the Professor’s will.

The will stated (requested) that the four now grown children that the Professor had taken in, mentored and helped as if they were his own, stay in Ravengro for one month to help his daughter Kendra settle his affairs and her own. A key and chest of books was also bequeathed to Mule, Alex, Scarab and Tenzin. It contained several old and dangerous texts which were to be returned to their rightful owners in Lepidstadt in no sooner than 1 months time. At which point each of the 4 heirs named in his will would receive 100 platinum pieces.

In the chest containing the books, the Professor had also left his Journal with several entries circled and marked:

The Will
